Having natural hair can be really tough. When you first start out, its a lot of trial and error as your learn your curl pattern and discover what does and does not work in your hair. I’ve only been on this natural hair journey since 2015 when I did the big chop right before my 30th birthday. That probably was one of the scariest days in my life… but it was also very liberating.
This past Summer I decided to grow my hair out, but growing it out has been a major challenge for me. One of the things I struggle with is my 4c texture does not hold moisture at all. Well, I shouldn’t say it doesn’t hold moisture at all, it’s just very hard for me to find products that work really well for my hair and leave it feeling pillow soft.
After months of buying products and only using them once because they didn’t work, I’ve finally discovered a few products that my hair loves, smell great, give me moisture and don’t cost a fortune!
Shea Yogurt – Alikay Naturals $16
This combination of whipped shea butter, coconut oil, argan oil, almond oil and rosemary leaves my dry kinky hair feeling extremely moisturized and gives it a sweet scent. Not only do I love to use this on my coils, but I also like to use it on my skin because it leaves it extremely soft during the winter months.
DoubleButter Cream – As I Am $15 – $28
Listen… I never knew love before… until I found this product. My hair is so kinky and just like my skin it just absorbs oil until there not a drop left, so its really hard to keep my moisturized and feeling soft. Over the last year I’ve spent a lot of money trying to figure out what works best and then I found Double Butter! This thick buttery cream gives my hair a pillow soft texture and leaves my coils looking plush and bouncy. Normally when I wake up in the morning, I have to reapply product to my hair to get it soft again. But, with DoubleButter I can go a few days and my hair will be just as soft as it was the first day of use.
Extra Butter – Uncle Funky’s Daughter $22
This gives my curls LIFE! It detangles, and elongates and moisturizes my curls which I love. The thing I love most about this one is that it doesn’t leave me with a waxy residue like some hair butters do.
Tucuma Moisture Whip – Darcy’s Botanicals $12
Just like the Shea Yogurt from Alikay Naturals, I love to use this Tucuma Moisture Whip on both my skin and hair. It leaves my skin and hair feeling healthy and nourished. Sometimes I mix it with a little leave-in conditioner for additional moisture and shine!
What products are you using to keep your hair moisturized? I’d love to hear about them!
Until next time…
